Card Access Policies
Scope
The Makerspace card and key access system is comprised of all access systems in the Makerspace across all areas under Makerspace control, including student organization offices.
The Makerspace card reader systems utilizes UIC Area Access Manager (AAM) to control access using university-issued iCards. A valid university iCard with tapping functionality is required to interface with the system. The Makerspace does not issue ID cards.
By entering the Makerspace you agree to follow all University and Makerspace policies.
Failure to adhere to policies can result in card access being revoked.

Users can complete Card Access Training to get access to some workshops in the Makerspace after hours:
This training is required for iCard access to the Makerspace. Card access is only required to use the Makerspace after hours – the space remains accessible during normal business hours. This training is not required to use any Makerspace facilities during normal hours.
Card access is generally only available to users from the College of Engineering completing coursework or student organization projects, and is considered a privilege. We will consider exceptions for users from outside the College of Engineering.
All card access is reset on June 1st each year and this training needs to be completed again to continue access.
Setting a PIN Heading link
To enter structure 1 (the office area) you will need to first set a PIN. Using the last 4 digits of your UIN is recommended. You need to be on-campus and on WiFi (or on VPN) to access this site. It may take 15 minutes for PIN changes to propagate:

ID cards that don’t read, or that don’t have tap functionality, will need to be replaced by the ID office in SCE.

General Makerspace card access policies
- Access using cards or keys is a privilege.
- Granted access is specific to individuals or Orgs and cannot be transferred.
- All users must present their ID card to staff on request.
- Users must not act to defeat or render inoperable any access control systems in the Makerspace (i.e., propping doors open, letting unknown users into the facility, etc.).
- Access to the card reader system does not permit access to tools for which there are additional requirements (Machine shop, Digital Fab Lab, student org spaces for which the user is not an authorized user as determined by that org)
- Access to the card reader system is still controlled by allowable access hours.
Student organization lock box policies
- Student Organizations must notify the Makerspace Director immediately if any lock box codes are changed and provide the new code.
- Student Organizations must notify the Makerspace Director immediately if a key is lost. Orgs will be charged for replacement keys or locksmith services.
- Student Organizations may not install their own access restrictions (i.e., additional locking mechanisms or alarm systems).
Engineering student organizations
Student organization leadership can nominate members of their org for card access to the Org-specific areas of the Makerspace – Structure 1, RRB 160 (cages). This should be requested by Org leadership. The Org will be held responsible for the actions of its members.
Students Orgs with assigned space will have the key box access information passed on to leadership and they can self-determine policies for passing key information on to their members.
Access credentials will be provided to Engineering Student Org faculty advisors by request.
Final eligibility of nominated individuals is determined by the Makerspace Director.
Requesting access to Org spaces
Email a list of members that require access to the Director with the following information in a spreadsheet:
- Name, UIN (found on ID card), NetID or UIC Email address
More users can be added at any time. All access resets on May 31st and must be re-requested annually.
Loss of access
Students found to violate University or Makerspace policies can be subject to the following actions. System audits to ensure compliance may be conducted at any time. Depending on the circumstances any of these can be used at any time and this list is non-exhaustive:
- Verbal or written warning
- Loss of access to the card reader systems for a probation period
- Loss of access to the Makerspace facility
- Referral to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate studies
- Referral to the Dean of Students office
Student organization leadership or faculty advisors may be involved in any disciplinary actions.
